The concern GM stops the production of the electric Chevrolet Volt due to the dramatically low demand. This hatchback of the golf – class, launched at the end of 2010 year, was to become one of the first mass electric cars, but now it became clear that the car manufacturer has overestimated the demand for such cars.

There is an obvious paradox: on the international auto shows almost all brand are new, and these serial models receive awards at various competitions, but even in the U.S. and Europe, only a small percentage of the motorists buy similar models. Chevrolet Volt is the clearest example of the prevailing trend. In the Wikipedia there is a list of prizes that received this model and they don’t even fit on one screen. This year Volt is nominated for the European Grand Prix Award the “Car of the Year”. According to the plans in 2012, GM Corporation has sold 60 000 copies of this model. But it is clear that the actual sales figures are not even close to the expectations. In January were sold about 600 cars, in February just over 1000. Even the last year’s modest plan is failed. Chevrolet Volt has sold 7.7 thousand cars.

Now the company has an overproduction crisis: the balance sheet – 3,6 thousands of unsold cars. The production will be stopped March 19. It should be noted that GM for the third time puts the conveyor “paused”: Last year stopped the production in January, and later in summer. Now without work will remain 1.3 thousand employees.
One of the main reasons for the failure of the electric cars is too high price. Chevrolet Volt in the U.S. costs $ 41,000.
